At the end of the year and the beginning of a new one, companies and organisations take time to debate and set goals for the year ahead. Sooner or later, organisations lock in the new year’s goals and start striving towards them. And so it repeats year after year. All teams need a shared goal or target to function. In this rush of setting goals at work, however, we often tend to forget ourselves. Why couldn’t we also, personally and within the family, take time two or three times a year to think about what matters to us? In other words, just like an organisation, think through and choose the milestones that matter to us. And why not put it all in writing for ourselves too?!

Years ago, when I first did this exercise personally and with my husband, it felt a bit strange and scary. Life isn’t like work, where everything is measured and given a goal! Surprisingly, the exercise was eye-opening for my husband and me – to put into words clearly for ourselves and share with each other what we wanted to change or achieve in the year ahead. It became a habit – a couple of times a year we take an hour or two to review and write down what we want to accomplish next in our lives. And of course to celebrate the things we have achieved during the year.

I am sharing with you a short tool made up of a few questions, which I hope will help you personally and your family put into words and share the most important things in your lives that you want to achieve in the coming year: [EXERCISE: My wheel of life and personal goals (in Estonian)](https://sunergos.ee/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/HARJ_Minu-eluratas-ja-isiklikud-eesm%C3%A4rgid.pdf)

A few tips from my own experience:

- First write down all the wishes and goals that come to mind. Then choose up to three of the most important ones that you would be very happy to achieve!
- What matters is that the goal you write down is important to you or your family. A goal can also be written as an activity – for example: “Every month we will take at least two evenings to go to the cinema, the theatre or out to eat, just the two of us”, or similar. A goal phrased as an activity is often more inspiring than one described as a measurable result. For example, how inspiring would the personal goal “We will go to the cinema, the theatre or out to eat together 24 times a year” be?!
- Find time to review your goals together with your family two or three times a year and to celebrate the successes along the way.

While an organisation’s goals come from its owners and management, you are the owner of your personal goals. So why not take the bull by the horns, write down and share with your family what your personal goals are for the year ahead?!
