## How do the GROW cards work?

Move step by step from goal to action. For each stage, the deck gives you questions that help steer the conversation.

1. Step 1

    ### Setting the goal

A goal gives the conversation value and direction. The leader’s role is to help the person set goals that are inspiring and challenging enough, while also being realistic, measurable and time-bound.

2. Step 2

    ### Exploring reality, or the current situation

The aim of this stage is to help raise the person’s awareness, see connections, and increase objectivity and the ability to describe the situation. We can choose and control what we are aware of, but what we are not aware of controls us.

It is important to stay at the level of goals and reality long enough and not give in to the temptation to jump quickly to solutions. Once reality is clear enough, you can take a step back if needed, review the goals and give them a sharper focus.

3. Step 3

    ### Options

The aim of this stage is not to find the right answer or solution, but to generate as many different options as possible. At this stage the quantity of solutions matters, not their quality. Showing scepticism or criticism at this point can stop valuable ideas from emerging.

The leader’s role here is to create as accepting an atmosphere as possible, so the person is not afraid of looking ridiculous. A brainstorming mindset and repeatedly asking “what else?” help a lot.

4. Step 4

    ### Action plan and will

The aim of the last step is to turn the conversation into a concrete decision. At this stage it is important to check how well the solution meets the goal (both long and short term), to clarify the details and to settle on a precise action plan: WHAT needs to be done, WHEN and by WHOM, and how strong the will to act and contribute is.
